Lebanon is reeling from a wave of deadly Israeli airstrikes that have left at least seven people dead, including two children, marking the most significant escalation since a ceasefire established on November 27. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has issued a stark warning, stating that the nation is at risk of descending into a “new war” as violence reignites along its southern border.
The Israeli military confirmed a “second wave” of attacks aimed at Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, a move characterized by Israeli officials as necessary to address perceived threats from the militant group. Notably, one air raid in the coastal city of Tyre resulted in fatalities, with additional strikes reported in the southern towns of Touline and Qlaileh, injuring several more.
In response to the airstrikes, Hezbollah has adamantly denied any involvement in the recent rocket attacks on northern Israel, accusing Israel of using these incidents as a pretext for renewed aggression. The group's denial and its commitment to the November ceasefire reflect the internal pressures it faces amid escalating regional tensions.
Lebanon's Defence Minister Michel Menassa announced that the army is investigating the circumstances surrounding the rocket fire, urging ceasefire sponsors to take action against what he described as Israeli provocations.
As concerns of further conflict loom, President Joseph Aoun condemned attempts to destabilize Lebanon, calling for decisive actions to prevent escalations. The recent violence comes on the heels of Israel abandoning a separate ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza and elevates fears of a broader conflict in the region, compelling Lebanon to navigate a precarious path between military actions and political stability.
If tensions continue to rise, the consequences for Lebanon and its people could be severe, prompting urgent calls for international intervention to de-escalate the situation.
